Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Review

The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G is a powerful, feature-packed mid-range 5G device. Even though the price is a little high, the phone has an excellent screen, good battery life and a great camera set-up.

The A73 naturally runs on the most recent and finest version of One UI (4.1) on top of Android 12, but its main selling point is that it will receive 4 major OS updates and 5 years of security updates.

Enough with the claims and potential of the phone. How well does it operate in actual use? We’ve had the phone for a few weeks, and here’s an in-depth review of the Samsung Galaxy A73 5G.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Design and Build

At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy A73 5G offers an attractive look. The polycarbonate material used to create this product gives it a high-end appearance and feel. We have the White colour variant for the review with us, which is absolutely stunning from any POV. Apart from this, the phone comes in mint and grey colour options.

Samsung made the side rail look even better by giving it a metallic finish. The matte frosted finish on the back of the device makes it look more modern and protects it from fingerprints.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G design

In spite of the large battery inside the Galaxy A73 5G, Samsung has done an excellent job of keeping the total weight down to just 181 grams. It’s simple to operate with just one hand, and its balanced design is another plus.

There are four cameras and an LED flash located in a small hump on the back of the device. It appears that the rectangular camera unit blends in nicely with the rear panel. The back also features Samsung branding on the bottom. The IP67 rating means the Samsung Galaxy A73 5G is safe for use in freshwater up to 1 metre deep for up to 30 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G right side

The volume controls and the power lock/unlock button are located on the right side of the device. The hybrid SIM tray and a secondary microphone are located on the top edge, while the USB Type-C port and speaker grill are located at the bottom.

All in all, the design is simple and minimalistic, which is something most users will like.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G has a quad-camera setup consisting of a 108MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 5MP depth sensor. A 32MP front camera takes care of selfies.

The primary sensor takes decent pictures in bright daylight, with sharp details and good colour accuracy. You get 12-megapixel images by default, with plenty of detail in both the well-lit areas and the shadows, and with the noise effectively under control.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G camera unit

Even though it is nighttime, you can still get good results as long as it is not too dark. Results are enhanced by switching to night mode, which effectively controls shadows. Digital zoom of up to 10x allows you to get even closer to your subject, though at the expense of some details.

The depth sensor takes portrait shots that are both professional-looking and good enough to share on social media. Edge detection is very good, and I was quite impressed with the outcomes. I really liked that you get the option to adjust the bokeh and lighting effect of a shot after it’s taken.

The ultra-wide lens captures a large field of view and decent images, but the details are not even close to those captured by the primary rear camera.

Macro mode allows you to get some decent closeup shots, but it needs you to get very close to the subject. Additionally, the camera app does not auto switch to macro mode; however, it will prompt you to switch to macro.

The camera app on Samsung Galaxy A73 5G includes a number of different shooting modes, including slow motion, super slow motion, Panorama, Food, Pro, Single take, and a portrait mode.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G camera features

My selfies taken in daylight with the front camera have generally accurate skin tones. It’s also capable of taking decent portraits, though the quality suffers in low light.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G front camera

Even though it has a 108-megapixel camera, you can’t record an 8K video. The back cameras can record videos at 4k@30fps and 1080p@30/60fps, and the front cameras can only record at 1080p@30fps. Since the primary sensor has OIS, the resulting videos are relatively steady.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Battery and Charging

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G packs a decent 5000mAh battery. For casual users, the battery life of this phone should last for two days. This involves mainly calling, and texting, along with casual social media usage. For a heavy user, the phone might need some charge by the evening.

Battery life can be improved with the help of some software features that Samsung provides. Lowering down the refresh rate to 60Hz further extends the battery life. I got about 7-8 hours of screen on time but it can vary depending on your usage.

The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G supports fast charging at up to 25 watts, but the company doesn’t include a charging brick in the box with the device, which is a bit depressing. The box includes a USB Type-C to Type-C cable so if you have a typical old charger at home, there are chances that you might need to buy a new charger for your A73. The 25W fast charger takes about 1.5 hours to fully charge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent.

The phone does not support wireless charging, which is disappointing given the price of the device.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Display

The front of the Samsung Galaxy A73 5G is occupied by a 6.7-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen that can refresh at 120Hz. As to be expected from a SuperAMOLED Plus display, the colours, saturation, and vibrancy are superb. We had no problems using the phone in bright sunlight thanks to the peak brightness of 800 nits.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G display

The screen displays colours and details very well, making it enjoyable to use social media applications like Instagram as well as streaming content from platforms like Netflix. The screen size is big, and the bezels are super thin; this, in conjunction with support for HDR, makes viewing content even more enjoyable.

Samsung’s term for refresh rate is “motion smoothness,” and it can be set to either 60Hz or 120Hz and you do not get any kind of adaptive refresh rate feature. The 120 Hz refresh rate ensures that animations are always smooth.

The device offers a Vivid Mode and a Natural Mode for the display. The Vivid mode produces colours that are bright and vibrant, while the Natural mode offers a more accurate representation of natural colours.

You can turn on the always-on display if you want to see your notifications and other important details without needing to turn on your screen. On top of this, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 shields the AMOLED screen, making it quite resistant to scratches and drops.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Performance

The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset. The phone also has 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. In addition to that, it supports the RAM Plus feature, which is a virtual RAM technology that enables users to increase the amount of RAM on their phone by up to 8GB.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G RAM plus feature

The 778G is a decent processor, and it is an excellent chip for mid-range 5G smartphones. The sad part here is that the same chipset is used in phones that cost nearly half as much as the A73 5G. The A73 is not sluggish in any way, and it performs admirably.

The device allows for seamless web browsing, social media browsing, multitasking, streaming media, and more. I did not face any lags during the review time while doing these tasks. Actually, the phone did well even under stress, even when we were quickly switching between different apps and games.

If you’re curious to know if the performance is the same as the Samsung Galaxy A52s, which also features the Snapdragon 778G chip, the answer is yes. However, the Samsung Galaxy A73 5G seems even more smooth than the A52s, which I think is because of better optimization.

Talking about the gaming performance, this chipset can easily handle graphic-intensive games. I tried out BGMI, Call of Duty: Mobile and Genshin Impact. All the games ran well in medium to high settings.

I was able to run BGMI at extreme FPS without experiencing any lag. The gameplay was enjoyable and the game ran without a hitch. After 30 minutes of continuous gaming, the phone gets a little warm, but not to a level where it becomes uncomfortable to hold in hands.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Software and UI

The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G operates on Android 12, the most recent version, with Samsung’s One UI 4.1 skin. One UI is one of the best Android custom user interfaces not only because it has a ton of features, but because it is well-organized and simple to navigate.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G OS

Overall, the user experience is fluid and responsive. The best thing about One UI is that you can easily customize the UI to fit your needs. Features such as a system-wide dark mode, a customizable interface, an app lock, dual messenger, and a Secure Mode are all available in One UI.

Furthermore, you can take advantage of other standard Samsung functions like the lift-to-wake function, gesture navigation, and the one-handed mode.

There are quite a few third-party applications that are already installed on the device, such as Josh, Dailyhunt, Moj, MX Takatak, Prime Video, Snapchat, PhonePe, and others. However, if you do not require these applications, you have the option to remove them from the device.

Also noteworthy is that the Galaxy A73 5G will receive 4 years of major Android updates from Samsung, making it an even more compelling buy than the Google Pixel phones.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G features a Dolby Atmos-compatible stereo speaker setup and can deliver adequate sound without the need for a separate sound bar or headphones. You won’t need to worry about the volume level of the audio output because it is sufficient for binge-watching television shows or movies.

Coming to the connectivity, the Galaxy A73 comes with 5G connectivity. It phone has support for 9 5G bands which include N1, N3, N5, N7, N28, N40, N41, N66, and N78. Other connectivity options include WiFi – 802.11, Bluetooth – v5.0, NFC and GPS.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G features an in-display fingerprint sensor as well as a face unlock feature for unlocking the phone. The fingerprint sensor works quickly and accurately to unlock the device. The face unlock also works well during daylight but struggles during the night time.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G gives the impression of a much more expensive phone than it actually is. It has a display that is both vivid and detailed, making it a joy to use for consuming content. The device is not only aesthetically pleasing but also lightweight and easy to carry around.

The phone comes equipped with a powerful processor that is not only able to breeze through routine tasks but is also able to play games with respectable graphical settings. Additionally, the phone is waterproof up to IP67 standards, and, all things considered, its cameras are good as well.

Despite the fact that the phone has a decent overall package when it comes to performance, the display, and the battery, it falls short in some essential areas. One of them is that there is no charging brick and the device charges slowly.

Even though it lacks flagship specifications, the Samsung Galaxy A73 5G succeeds as a whole because it does a good job in most areas. The brand value of Samsung with the promise of 4 years of OS updates definitely makes it a solid recommendation.
