Description

Xperia R1 Plus is a budget-friendly phone from the house of Sony. It was launched in October 2017.

The phone runs on Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box and is designed to upgrade to Android 8.0 Oreo. It features a 5.2-inch HD TFT 2.5D curved glass display and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. For the processor, it has an Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with Adreno 505 GPU. Combined with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage, the processor promises a smooth and seamless performance. A 2620 mAh non-removable battery powers it.

Coming to the cameras, Xperia R1 Plus packs a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. The rear camera comes with Sony Exmor sensor, LED flash, and Predictive Hybrid Autofocus. As usual, Sony has gone all out when it comes to the camera.

This dual-SIM phone comes in two color variants – Silver and Black. In India, it is priced at Rs. 12,990.

Highlights

Pros

  • It has a 5.2-inch IPS LCD HD multi-touch, capacitive touchscreen.
  • The 13MP rear camera has advanced features like Predictive Phase Detection Autofocus, LED flash, Geo-tagging, Touch Focus, and Face Detection.
  • The camera offers crystal clear zoom up to 8x.
  • It supports Quad HD video recording at 1080p@30fps.
  • The design and build quality are impressive.
  • It has a dedicated mic with Active noise cancellation.

Cons

  • Many sensors like fingerprint sensor, compass, and gyroscope are missing.
  • It has an older version of Android OS.
  • It doesn’t support fast charging.
  • The battery isn’t sufficient.
  • The design is outdated since now it’s the era of bezel-less display.

For a smartphone priced at around 13k, the specs could have been much better.

Expert Opinion

Sony has designed Xperia R1 Plus to “fit seamlessly into your life.” The neat, uncluttered design, the 2.5D curved glass, the 13MP predictive camera with Autofocus, and the stunning colors – all make the Xperia R1 Plus the perfect flagship device from Sony. Let’s find out if it’s worth the hype!

Display

Sony Xperia R1 Plus features a 5.2-inch (13.21 cm) multi-touch capacitive TFT display with a screen resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels (282 PPI). The display is great with excellent color reproduction, and the user interface is intuitive.

Design

Unlike modern-day smartphones, this phone has thick bezels which might be a turn-off for many. However, the build quality is pretty solid!

On the rear panel lies the camera with LED Flash just below it. As for the volume and power buttons, they are placed on the right side, whereas the left panel only houses the SIM tray. On the bottom part, you will find the USB Type-C port.  It weighs around 154g, and its dimensions are 146mm x 73.2mm x 8.89mm (height x width x thickness). Since it has soft, slightly-rounded corners, and a matte-finish body, it allows for good grip and comfortable handling.

Performance

Sony Xperia R1 Plus operates on Android v7.1 (Nougat) on 64-bit architecture. It is powered by 1.4 GHz Octa-Core Qualcomm® Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with Adreno 505 GPU for enhanced graphical performance. The 3GB RAM ensures that there’s enough space to facilitate smooth and lag-free performance.

Although the internal storage is only 32GB, it is expandable up to 128GB. For the most part, the phone can very well handle day-to-day tasks smoothly, without showing any signs of lagging. However, it might not be the ideal device for intensive gaming.

Camera

As we mentioned before, Sony hardly disappoints when it comes to the camera front. The 13MP rear camera is equipped with ISO 1600, Predictive Hybrid Autofocus, Exmor Sony Sensor, LED Flash, and 8X Clear Zoom. Apart from these, the camera has 12 capturing modes, Continuous Shooting, Beauty Mode, and Face Detection. Needless to say, captured photos will be not only amazing but also very detailed.

Although the 8MP selfie camera has no flash, it does have ISO 1600 for photos and ISO 2400 for videos, 8X Clear Zoom, Predictive Hybrid Autofocus, Continuous Shooting, Beauty Mode, and Face Detection. Both the cameras are capable of taking some excellent shots in brightly lit environments. For low-light surroundings, the picture quality of the pics snapped through the front cam is only average.

Battery

Sony Xperia R1 Plus has a 2620 mAh non-removable battery. Obviously, this is insufficient, considering the screen size and the processor. The battery might only be able to stretch through an entire day for normal-to-medium usage. For more memory and graphically intensive tasks like gaming or online streaming, battery power is bound to exhaust faster. The battery seems to be the biggest disappointment of the phone.

Verdict

Overall, Sony Xperia R1 Plus gets a thumbs up only when it comes to two aspects – one being the display, and the other being the camera. With mediocre performance, the phone utterly disappoints on the battery front. At this price range, there are many smartphones from brands like Xiaomi, Huawei, and Motorola that offer better specs and design.
