MediaTek Dimensity 9000 5G Chipset To Rival with Qualcomm’s 800-series
  • The chipmaker MediaTek announces a new chipset – the Dimensity 9000 5G. As we know, MediaTek is shining as a flagship-level player for a couple of years now. However, it has always remained second-best compared to Qualcomm’s 800 series. Especially the Dimensity 1000 series and Dimensity 1200 SoC bearing the major grunt. But it looks like the company is aiming to make itself a place as the choice for premium Android smartphones.

“MediaTek Dimensity 9000 5G will be aiming at luring customers who like to use its offerings in their flagship devices.”

The Chief Financial Officer at MediaTek, David Ku states

In another interview to Reuters, he stated “We need to have a very strong army to march into the segment”. “One product is not enough – this is our starting point.”

The Hsinchu, Taiwan-based company claims its new MediaTek Dimensity 9000 5G chip will be the world’s first to use “N4” chipmaking process. This technology from its manufacturing partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s helps makes chips smaller and faster. In addition, it will also be the first smartphone chip to feature a powerful new computing core from Arm called the Cortex X2.

MediaTek Dimensity 9000 5G also employs a Mali-G710 MC10 GPU — right in Arm’s performance sweet spot for its new graphics core. This is the latest GPU in Arm’s portfolio, and the chip designer claims that its implementation will result in a 35% performance boost and a 60% efficiency gain over the Snapdragon 888. Again, this is comparing a 4nm-class part against a 5nm chipset, but that’s a major gain if confirmed, although the real point of comparison will be against Qualcomm’s next processor.

In the chipmakers market, Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek are the only ones making 5G smartphone chips. The fourth major player – Huawei, which also made its own phones – was forced out of the market by US sanctions. However, Huawei’s exit has started a sprint to capture market share vacated by the Chinese brand. Brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo use MediaTek for their low and mid-tier devices and rely on Qualcomm for higher-end models.
