Description

Huawei P Smart Plus (2019) has the looks that will keep you attracted to it. Priced at Rs.16,500, the phone is more of a mixed bag with the premium brand name holding it tall.

The phone is not necessarily disappointing. It has all the aspects required from a mid-range phone that will keep you satisfied. However, considering the brand, the P Smart does not come with anything that will blow your mind. It is just a regular handsome phone

Highlights

The Huawei P Smart Plus (2019) does not have the oomph in its performance, but as a low-priced phone does come with some important assets. It has a few pros and cons: l

Pros

  • Huawei P Smart Plus has a fantastic design which looks near-premium.
  • The phone comes with a bright display with an elegant sharpness.
  • The battery of Huawei P Smart Plus is quite long-lasting and can chug on for a day.

Cons

  • The phone is of a plastic build.
  • It still has not moved on to USB Type-C port
  • It gives a mixed-bag performance with sudden lags in gaming and intensive apps.
  • No wireless charging.
  • The camera images are processed aggressively delivering artificial-looking images.

The Huawei P Smart Plus is a good-looking phone, but it is not an all-rounder. The phone is more of a hit-and-a-miss. However, if you like a phone with the Huawei tag, then this phone does not disappoint ultimately and is recommended.

Expert Opinion

Huawei P Smart Plus keeps it small and sweet without going for any stark improvement, delivering an ordinary phone with the premium brand tag attached to it.

Display

Huawei P Smart Plus has a 6.21 inches screen with a Full HD resolution and coming with the 19:5:9 aspect ratio. The bezels are very light on this set, and therefore, you get about a 90% screen-to-body ratio. The resolution on this set is about 2230×1080 pixels with about 415ppi pixel density. It is quite high and is better than iPhone XR getting about 326ppi. As a mid-range phone, the pixel density is quite impressive. You can use it outdoors without any problem. Also, viewing angles are quite right and do not decrease the legibility of the phone.

Design

Huawei P Smart Plus is quite light at about 160g, but that is because unlike the Honor 10 Lite with its rear glass, the P Smart Plus is made of plastic. While the rear has a glossy effect and looks almost like glass, it is plastic. However, it remains smooth and durable. The problem with the phone is that it will attract too many scratches, unlike glass, so you have to be careful about it. A screen protected can always help. The gradient finish that this phone comes with is quite premium looking. The phone comes with about 8mm thickness, which is quite thin. The fingerprint scanner is mounted on the rear panel and is in an ergonomic position. At the bottom, the phone comes with a speaker, headphone jack, and unfortunately, the micro USB port. It has not moved on the USB Type-C port even now. The notification LED is also present below the screen.

Performance

The Huawei P Smart Plus (2019) gets its power from the Kirin 710 chipset, which is paired with 3GB RAM. Multitasking with this phone is quite smooth with essential apps. However, you should not push it too much with power-hungry apps and games. Then, you will experience a slow-down and the loading time, in case of games, will be quite slow also. However, app-switching is fast and will not frustrate you. Noticeable stutters are present while playing 3D games and in the loading screen. Overall, the performance of this phone is a mixed bag.

Camera

The Huawei P Smart Plus 2019 arrives with a triple camera module with 24MP primary camera supported by a 16MP camera and a 2MP depth-sensing camera. It is a significant improvement over the Huawei P Smart’s dual camera setup – 13MP and 2MP depth sensor.  The problem with the phone cameras is that they tend to go for aggressive processing resulting in washed out colours, especially when the contrast of the photos are poor. The exposure is not bad in right light conditions since it tends to brighten up the shots and balance out the lights well enough. But the details are not on point. You also have AI mode, which you can select for advanced scene detection. The pictures taken with the AI mode is just fair, but there is too much oversaturation. Due to lack of stabilization, handshakes become too prominent. Portrait photos are still ok. In Night Mode, the phone can capture long-exposure low-light shots well, similar to Pixel 3’s Night Sight. The front 8MP selfie camera clicks reasonable shots when it comes to clicking decent selfies.

In case of videos, you can shoot Full HD resolution videos but you get a bit of grain inserted in your footage too.

Battery

The Huawei P Smart Plus comes with a 3,400mAh battery. It is a long-lasting battery and can quickly go through a full day with light to moderate use. When playing a Full HD video on this phone with Wi-Fi on, the phone lost only about 19%, which is decent enough though not fantastic. There are, however, Power saving modes, like Power Saving or Ultra Power Saving, which does make the battery last longer. The phone does not have quick charging, and so it will take about an hour and a half to get from dead to 100%. There is no wireless charging on this phone.

Verdict

Overall, the Huawei P Smart Plus looks like a rehashed version of the Honor 10 Lite. It’s not identical, but the specifications are almost similar. In performance; however, the phone tends to falter since it is rather a mixed bag when it is pushed in terms of gaming or intensive apps. Also, the lack of USB-C port is a disappointment. However, the phone comes with a potent battery and a decent camera. So, if you are a photographer and not into intense gaming, then this phone may not be a great find. However, Honor 10 Lite can be a good alternative too.
