Mac Mini M6 And M5 Pro Release Date

The Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro were announced on August 25, 2026. Pre-orders are already live, while availability starts September 22.

The new Mac mini ships with macOS 27, also known as Golden Gate, along with the latest Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features. The compact design remains similar to the 2024 Mac mini, so you should not expect a dramatic visual change.

The M6 uses two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores. Its GPU also gets Neural Accelerators in every core, which is a big part of Apple’s push towards local AI.

Apple claims the M6 Mac mini can achieve up to 40 percent faster CPU performance, twice the graphics performance and twice the storage performance compared with the M4 Mac mini. AI performance can be up to four times faster in Apple’s testing.

Those are big numbers, but remember that they are Apple’s own test results. Your actual improvement will depend on the apps and workloads you use.

For someone who simply uses ChatGPT or other cloud-based AI services, though, buying the M5 Pro purely for AI would be difficult to justify.

Connectivity Gets A Useful Upgrade

The M6 model has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M5 Pro gets three Thunderbolt 5 ports.

Both models also include HDMI, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7. A 10Gb Ethernet upgrade is available.

For most people, the M6 is the Mac mini I would recommend.

I would pick the M5 Pro if you regularly work with:

The Mac mini M6 is the sweet spot I feel. It gives you the new 2nm M6 chip, stronger graphics, faster storage, improved AI performance, and Wi-Fi 7. Also, enough memory for most everyday and professional workloads.

The M5 Pro is the better machine if you actually need its extra CPU and GPU cores, higher memory ceiling, faster memory bandwidth and Thunderbolt 5. It is built for people who can use that extra power, not simply people who want the most expensive configuration.

The biggest advantage of both models is still the same thing that made the Mac mini popular in the first place. You get a lot of computing power in a very small desktop.

If I were buying one for myself, I would pick the Mac mini M6 unless I had a clear professional reason to move to the M5 Pro. The M6 gives you the best balance of performance, size and price, while the M5 Pro is the better choice for serious creators, developers and local AI users who can actually use its extra hardware.
