Review Summary

Infinix generally focuses on budget-level smartphones and has launched its latest Hot 20 5G in India. The phone brings a bunch of good features and specifications. Infinix has put a lot into making this budget 5G phone and I can see that very well.

For starters, it packs a MediaTek Dimensity 810 chipset, a 120Hz IPS display and a 50MP primary camera. The phone looks nice design-wise and performs good enough for its asking price. On top of that, the main camera takes decent shots in daylight.

The phone is backed by a 5000mAh battery which offers a solid battery backup of about two days on light usage. All of this sounds too good for a phone costing 12K. So, how well does it perform in real life usage? Let’s find out in this Infinix Hot 20 5G review.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Design and Build

The Infinix Hot 20 5G comes in a boxy-looking design which appears to be nice. It is available in three different colour options: Racing Black, Blaster Green and Space Blue. We have the latter for the review and it looks pretty good for a phone costing 12K.

It features a polycarbonate back, which is expected at this price point, with a textured finish. The back has a shiny feel to it when light falls on it but thanks to the textured finish, you don’t see any fingerprint smudges or scratches.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Design

The top left side holds the rectangular camera island which houses the two lenses along with LED flash. Yes, it protrudes a bit and hence the phone wobbles when placed on a flat surface. The edges are on the flatter side, which gives a good grip.

The in-hand feel of the phone is good, but it feels slightly on the heavier side. That is due to the weight of 204 grams which makes the phone a bit bulky.

Infinix Hot 20 5G looks

Coming over the front, you see a water-drop notch which seems a bit dated. It would have been nice if Infinix included a punch-hole cutout. Apart from this, you will see thick bezels surrounding the display.

Talking about ports and buttons, the right side has volume buttons along with a power button which doubles as a fingerprint scanner. The left side has the SIM card tray while the top side is clean. The bottom side has the type-C port, speaker grille, microphone and 3.5mm audio jack.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Camera

Infinix Hot 20 5G features a dual camera setup on the back. This includes a 50MP main camera and an AI lens. The font has an 8MP camera for taking selfies. So, does it take any good pictures? Well, it does…kind of.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Camera

So starting off with the main camera. The 50MP lens does seem to take good photos in good lighting conditions. The images had a good level of detailing and sharpness. However, I feel the dynamic range and colours could have been better.

However, the image quality takes a hit when the light drops. The low-light images were simply not good. There was a lot of noise in the images and the colours also looked faded. There is a dedicated Super Night mode for such scenarios but it just blows the images with exposure without helping with the details.

The portrait mode was fine and it took decent shots. The edge detection was good most of the time and the subject was well separated from the background. Just forget about the AI lens. It’s basically trash. I would have appreciated if Infinix had added an ultra-wide lens instead of this.

Coming over to the front, the 8MP camera took some decent selfies in daylight. The selfies were bright and detailed and the colours also looked fine. Things took a turn when I tried to take portrait selfies. The edge detection was a total hit or miss. For the most part, it blurred my hair and collar area.

Infinix Hot 20 5G video recording

Talking about videos, you can record 1080p videos at 30fps from both the main and front cameras. The quality was fine but the recordings were quite shaky. Don’t expect any stable video recordings. Overall, the camera on the Infinix Hot 20 5G is good for the price and it will be more than enough for an average user.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Battery and Charging

Infinix Hot 20 5G packs a big 5000mAh battery and offers a good battery backup. By saying good battery backup, I mean you can easily get a full day of battery life even on heavy usage. If you are a light user, you can extend that to the second day with no worries.

I got about 6 hours of screen on time which is expected from a 5000mAh battery. My usage involved some social media scrolling, playing games, watching series on Netflix and taking pictures.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Battery

You get modes like Ultra power saving mode and power boost mode as you see on other smartphones, to further extend the battery life. To be honest, Infinix Hot 20 5G offers a pretty solid battery backup for its price and I am sure that you won’t be disappointed with it.

Coming over to the charging part, the phone comes with 18W of fast charging support. The 18W fast charger takes about two and a half hours to fully charge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent. A one hours charge will juice up the battery to about 60 per cent.

Although it takes time to charge the phone, it’s a good decision by the brand to include the fast charger in the box.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Display

Infinix Hot 20 5G features a nice FHD+ 6.6 inches IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. It comes with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 500 nits. The display is decently bright for indoor use but the problem occurs when you head outdoors.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Display

It was tough to see the text and icons in bright daylight. I would recommend you to keep the phone in your pocket under direct sunlight. Keeping that aside, the 120Hz refresh rate really makes the overall experience very smooth. I was loving the smoothness while scrolling through my Insta feed and the UI.

Talking about the display quality, the display is quite sharp, crisp and vivid. It’s an LCD panel, so the blacks are not so deep and the colours are not as punchy as your see on an AMOLED display. But nonetheless, it’s a great display for its price.

I watched a couple of episodes of Manifest on Netflix and my experience was pretty good. The details and colours were up to my liking. The viewing angles were nice as well. I wish the bezels were a bit thinner. You see thick bezels all around the display, especially the wide chin at the bottom. On top of that, the water-drop notch does not really help in offering an immersive viewing experience.

Not to forget, it comes with Widevine L1 support so you can watch high-quality content on OTT platforms like Netflix and Prime Videos. However, it does not support HDR, which is a bit disappointing. All in all, Infinix has offered a great display for multimedia usage.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Performance & Software

Infinix has made sure not to fall behind when it comes to performance. The Infinix Hot 20 5G is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 810 chipset which is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. You also get the MemFusion feature which adds an additional 3GB of RAM using the internal storage, which makes the total RAM of 7GB.

Infinix Hot 20 5G chipset

Now we all know how beneficial (sarcasm) this extra RAM is, so let’s just skip it. I feel like 4GB RAM is a bit less when it comes to performing heavy tasks or perhaps multitasking. Keeping that aside, the phone glides through day to day activities and I did not face any issues. The apps opened up quickly and switching between apps was also seamless.

The Dimensity 810 chipset is a solid SoC and definitely one of the best chipsets you could get at this price point. Generally, this chipset is seen in phones costing 15K, but Infinix has managed to fit it inside a 12K phone which is amazing. Definitely a thumbs up for Infinix.

So how does it perform when it comes to gaming? To answer that, I tested a couple of graphic-intensive games like CoD Mobile, Apex Legends and Asphalt 9. I could run all these games at medium to high settings.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Performance

Infinix Hot 20 5G Gaming Performance

Yes, there were a few instances where I noticed some lags and frame drops. But, the overall gaming experience was pretty good and enjoyable. There’s also a dedicated gaming mode, XAreana which lets you block incoming notifications, reject incoming calls, optimise game graphics and much more.

Infinix Hot 20 5G runs on XOS skin which is based on Android 12. The phone is packed with features and customisation options. On the same side, you get plenty of third-party apps pre-installed on the phone. While you can uninstall most of them, some cannot be uninstalled like Theme, My Health, XArena, Phone Master and more.

Infinix Hot 20 5G Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

Infinix Hot 20 5G Audio features a single speaker grille on the bottom. The audio quality is average and the speakers get pretty loud. You also get the 3.5mm audio jack, so it’s better if you just plug in your earphones and continue your music or gaming sessions.

The phone comes with 5G connectivity, as heavily advertised by the company. It offers 12 5G bands, which include n1, n3, n5, n7, n8, n20, n28, 38, n40, n41, n77, and n78. Other connectivity options include: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and even NFC.

Infinix Hot 20 5G connectivity

Talking about biometrics, it features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which works like a charm. It’s not the fastest, but it quickly unlocks the phone. Not to forget, it was pretty accurate and reliable. You can also use the face unlock feature but it’s less reliable.

Verdict

The Infinix Hot 20 5G is a great value for money smartphone. It has everything you would want in a budget phone at this time – 5G connectivity, solid performance, good battery life, a big 120Hz display and much more.

Day to day performance was smooth and I faced no issues. I wish Inifinix could have used an AMOLED panel rather than IPS. Other than that. I feel the camera performance could have been much better, considering they have used a 50MP sensor.

Battery life was great but 18W fast charging was a bit slow. It would have been nice to see a 30W or 33W fast charging support. Nonetheless, no phone is perfect and the same can be said for Infinix Hot 20 5G. I have to say that Infinix has done a really good job with this phone.
