Google Pixel Fold: What we know so far

On one side Google is prepping for the launch of its Pixel 6 series, there is another device in pipeline. In the past few years, rumours of a Google Pixel Fold has surfaced quite a lot. Although without any solid proof of its existence. A new rumour suggests that a release date could be in the final months of 2021. On the other hand, references to the supposed device surfaced early on in the Android 12 beta cycle.

Now, a new leak from Senior Director at Display Supply Chain Consultants, David Naranjo (via GSMArena), suggests that the Google Pixel Fold will make its debut in Q4 2021. According to Naranjo, the Fold will feature a variable refresh rate, maxing out at 120Hz. It will be thanks to an LTPO OLED display panel. His tweet lists out several devices arriving in Q3 and Q4 2021 that can use LTPO OLED panels.

Google Pixel Fold: What we know so far

In 2019, Google revealed that it had started working on foldable smartphone prototypes. The company also provided support for foldable displays in Android 10. This was leveraged by companies including Samsung to develop their in-house foldable phones. Now, Google Pixel Fold will be one of the smartphones in the foldable phone market. Moreover, this is the first-ever reference to the Pixel Fold in clarity.

Earlier, last year, a purported internal Android document suggested the Q4 2021 launch timeline for Google Pixel Fold. The phone appeared with the codename ‘Passport’ alongside ‘Raven’ and ‘Oriole’. They are apparently the codenames for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Whereas Google also confirmed the testing of various foldable prototypes. A patent filing suggested that the company could be finalising a model that would fold inwards.

Additionally, tipster Jon Prosser in February hinted that the rumours around the development of the Google Pixel Fold are real. He also stated that the phone could come either by the end of this year or early next year. However, Google has not yet revealed any details on whether it is planning to launch a foldable phone. If there is a chance the Pixel Fold is launching it will be one of the announcements at the Pixel 6 event. Or it could launch later this year. Apart from this, we don’t really know exactly what the Pixel Fold could look like.
