Vivo Y100 Design and Build

Vivo has really put some work into its design and the all-new Vivo Y100 comes out to be really good. The phone has a very attractive design, thanks to the glass back and large camera lenses that catch the eyes of everyone in a crowd.

I have the gold colour variant with me for the review and it looks very premium. Be it holding the phone or just glazing at it, it gives a premium vibe from every aspect. The flat metal frames offer a solid grip on my hands and don’t bite my palm.

All that is great, but what’s even better is when you take it out in the sun and it shows the real magic. The Vivo Y100 features a colour changing back panel which turns darker when exposed to sunlight.

The phone feels pretty light in the hands, weighing just about 181 grams and easy to carry around. It features an IP54 rating which protects it from water and dust to some extent.

The right side of the phone has volume rockers and a power button while the left side is clean. The top side holds the SIM card slot while the bottom side houses the type-C port, loudspeaker and 3.5mm audio jack.

Vivo Y100 Camera

Vivo phones are always pretty good in the camera department and the same is the case with Vivo Y100. It features a triple camera setup on the back that includes a 64MP OIS main camera, a 2MP depth camera and a 2MP macro lens. The front side has a 16MP selfie camera.

Vivo Y100 Camera

The main camera manages to take some really impressive shots in daylight conditions. The images I took were packed with details and looked really punchy. The dynamic range was wide and the contrast level was good.

Even the low light shots were nice. The details were captured well and the noise level was kept under control. Portrait shots came out really well. The edge detection was on point and the background blur was looking natural.

The macro lens was just average like any other budget phone. You can take some passable shots with really steady hands and proper lighting.

The 16MP front camera takes crisp and clear selfies. Selfies were bright and detailed. The skin tones looked close to natural and the dynamic range was fine. Portrait selfies were also good.

Vivo Y100 can record 4k videos at 30 fps from its main camera. The footage was very detailed and looked nice. You can lower the resolution to 1080P and get more stable footage, thanks to the OIS.

Vivo Y100 Battery and Charging

Vivo Y100 is backed by a 4500mAh battery which is paired with 44W fast charging support. Yes, it’s less than the 5000mAh battery that you see usually at this price. However, it still manages to deliver a decent battery life.

You can easily get a full day of battery backup from this phone with no problem and still be left with 10-20 per cent left by the night. Even a heavy user can use it throughout the day without needing the charger.

I got about 5 hours of screen on time which is average for this battery capacity. You can quickly charge the using its 44W adaptor which is provided in the box. It takes less than an hour to fully charge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent.

Vivo Y100 Display

Vivo Y100 features a good Full HD+ 6.38 inches AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1300 nits. I believe the specs are pretty good for the price. The display gets bright enough for outdoor use.

Vivo Y100 Display

The contents on the screen look sharp and crisp. Colours were punchy with deep blacks. You can adjust the colour temperature display settings along with changing the refresh rate. I watched a couple of videos on YouTube and my viewing experience was nice.

However, the water drop notch feels a bit dated and interrupts the viewing experience. Moreover, all the bezels are thin except for the thick chin which does not look very nice for a mid-range phone.

Other than that, it’s a good display for media consumption. Not to forget, it also comes with HRD10+ certification so you can consume high quality HDR content on OTT platforms.

Vivo Y100 Performance

Vivo Y100 is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset which is paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The phone comes with a RAM expansion feature that allows you to expand the RAM by an extra 8GB! This makes a total of 16GB RAM which is really impressive.

However, this extra RAM is not very practical and more of a gimmicky move so don’t fall for that. Other than that, the phone runs smoothly and glides through everyday tasks. I scrolled Instagram for hours and watches videos on YouTube and I did not face any lags.

Switching between apps was also smooth and the RAM management was also done well. You can play demanding games on it with low-medium settings. I played Call of Duty and Asphalt 9 and both the games ran well.

Vivo Y100 Gaming Performance

CoD gave me an enjoyable experience at low graphics and high frame rates while Asphalt 9 ran well on high settings. I did not notice the phone gettings too hot.

Vivo Y100 runs on Funtouch OS 13 which is based on Android 13. I am really impressed with Vivo providing the latest Android version out of the box. You get a bunch of features and customisation options to play around with within the UI.

Verdict

The Vivo Y100 catches the attention with its colour changing glass back and premium build quality. On top of that, you get a good 64MP main camera and 16MP front camera to take good photos. The performance of the phone is pretty solid as well.

I did not experience any lags during my time with the device. The phone runs on the latest Android 13 version which is really good to see. And lastly, the beautiful AMOLED display offers a smooth and vibrant multimedia experience.

On the other hand, the battery backup could have been better if there was a 5000mAh battery. But maybe Vivo decided to pack a less capacity battery to keep its weight low. All in all, the Vivo Y100 is a nice mid-range 5G phone for those who want an attractive design and a good camera.
