Apple has kept the same triple 48-megapixel camera setup on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, but that does not mean there are no major camera upgrades. The biggest change comes to the main camera, which now gets a variable aperture for the first time on an iPhone.

Major Upgrade: Variable Aperture
The variable aperture is easily the biggest camera upgrade on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Unlike the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which has a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture on its main camera, the iPhone 18 Pro Max can switch between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Apple uses six laser-cut blades to physically change the aperture depending on the scene.
At ƒ/1.48, the camera can allow more light to reach the sensor. This should help in low-light situations and indoor photography. Apple claims around a 50% improvement in low-light performance with the widest aperture.
But the bigger benefit is control.
For portraits, ƒ/1.8 can provide a good balance between light and depth of field. Meanwhile, switching to ƒ/2.8 or ƒ/4 can keep more of the background in focus, which can be useful for group photos and landscape shots.
This also gives creators more control while recording videos, especially when manually adjusting shutter speed and aperture.

What Else Has Changed?
The rest of the camera hardware is surprisingly similar. The iPhone 18 Pro Max still has a 48MP ultra-wide and 48MP telephoto camera, with the same 4x and 8x optical-quality zoom options as the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
However, Apple has added several software and camera-control improvements.
The new Pro Controls let users manually adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a histogram is also available for checking exposure.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max also gets Photographic Styles 3, with new texture and grain controls, along with Smart Focus Tracking. Apple has also added features such as post-capture Cinematic effects and 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse recording.
Interestingly, the front camera remains an 18MP Center Stage camera, so there isn’t a major hardware jump here either.

Verdict
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is not a complete camera hardware overhaul compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The ultra-wide, telephoto and front cameras remain broadly similar.
Instead, Apple has focused on making the main camera more versatile with variable aperture, a newer sensor and additional manual controls.
