Huawei Y5 Lite does not provide the performance or display that gives it a competitive edge even as a budget phone.

Key Features

Huawei Y5 Lite is the budget version of the accomplished Y5 phone, arriving with the Huawei trust with it. Priced at Rs. 8,290, the phone looks solid but does not deliver reliable performance.

The phone has a weak processor, sub-par camera and a dated display – all of it contributing to make this phone a failure in comparison to its competitor. It is a dated phone best left behind at the beginning of 2018.

Huawei Y5 Lite is the trimmed down version of the Huawei phone. It has a few pros and cons:

  • The design of Y5 Lite is quite good and easy to manage.
  • The phone has an excellent long-lasting battery chugging through a day.
  • The phone has Android Go.

  • It does not come with a fingerprint scanner.
  • The Y5 Lite has an HD screen which is quite dated considering there are sharper screens present in the competitive market.
  • The phone arrives with a weak processor that is not only near-obsolete but lags a lot.
  • The cameras on this phone are poor and produce grainy, low-quality images.

Overall, the Y5 Lite claims to be an entry-level phone but falters in comparison with other budget phones. It is not a recommended model for any user.

Expert Opinion

Huawei Y5 Lite does not provide the performance or display that gives it a competitive edge even as a budget phone.

The phone comes with a 5.45-inch with a 720p HD display. It comes with a popular 18:9 aspect ratio. The pixel density is not very high, and so, you don’t get a sharp display. The 720p HD display is quite low and does not have a competitive edge with its competitors arriving with HD+ or QHD. The brightness, however, is quite good though outdoors, the legibility falls, especially in harsh sunlight.

Display Resolution720 x 1440 pixels

The Huawei Y5 Lite is quite compact and pocketable. However, it does not have any specific feature that makes it stand out. In the front, the bezels are thinner and smaller than Y5 Prime. The back is not quite slippery, and this feature makes the phone grippy and easy to handle in one hand. The rear camera along with the LED us placed horizontally at the left top corner. The shortcoming of this phone is that it does not have any fingerprint scanner. However, you get Face Unlock for security.

The phone gets its power from MediaTek MT6739 chip. It is a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz. It has a 1GB RAM paired with Android Go. The phone is quite laggy due to the dated quad fire processor, especially considering most competitors have moved to octa-core processors. Multitasking is full of stutters, and if you use RAM-intensive apps, it might restart in the background. It is quite frustrating, and despite the smooth Android Go OS, the phone fails to satisfy any user. However, the Android Go app is quite reasonably fluid and offers good reading on data management, making the phone quite user-friendly. The lack of processing power takes away much of the usefulness of the Android Go system, something which Redmi Go has been able to utilize well.

The Huawei Y5 Lite comes with an 8MP and a 5MP front camera. Daylight shots are beautiful, but it does get a little bit of visual noise. The photos appear grainy. The images seemed quite natural with decent contrast levels. Low light shots, however, were inferior and grainy. Selfies have the same problem with challenging light conditions producing mediocre selfies.

The Huawei Y5 Lite sports a  non-removable 3020mAh battery. The endurance of the battery is quite good. With light use, it can keep chugging for an entire day. However, charging can take a lot of time going for over 2 hours. The power management also worked well.

As a budget phone, the Huawei Y5 Lite is an okay phone. If you are new to Android Go, then this phone can help you introduce to it. But due to the poor performance, you may not be able to experience the fluidity of the OS. It has a poor display and camera as well. Overall, for an Android Go handset, it is better to go for Redmi Go, rather than Huawei Y5 Lite. It is a poor handset and not recommended.
