Yes, it’s a tough position to be in, but I think Moto has got what it takes to shine out from the rest. Let’s dive deep into this Motorola Moto Edge 30 Fusion review and find out if it’s worth the asking price.

Edge 30 Fusion Specs at a glance

Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Design and Build

When it comes to providing an excellent in-hand feel, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion is among the best smartphones in its class. It has an undeniably elegant look. It is a small device that fits perfectly in the palm. The phone has a premium appearance thanks to the glass back and display edges that curve into the frame.

    Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Design

It is available in two colour options: Cosmic Grey and Solar Gold. I have the former, which looked sleek and elegant. The Edge 30 Fusion’s back panel is what really makes it stand out. It’s not flashy or shiny like some other phones, as it offers a very simple and subtle look.

On the back, there is branding for Motorola at the bottom, a brand logo in the middle, and a squarish camera unit with a triple camera setup. The back glass comes with a matte finish, which helps to prevent fingerprints and smudges. Additionally, the phone has an IP52 rating for some protection against water and dust to some extent.

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion has a very thin and sleek design and is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 both on the front and back sides. Its thinness of 7.45mm and light weight of 175 grams contribute to its excellent in-hand feel. The frames are made of sandblasted aluminium, giving it a solid and robust build. The camera island protrudes a bit and hence the phone wobbles when kept on a flat surface.

Talking about ports and button placements, the right side holds the power button and volume rockers, while the left side is clean. The top has a secondary microphone along with the Dolby Atmos logo. Lastly, the bottom side houses the type-C port, primary speaker, primary mic and SIM card tray.

    Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Camera

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion features a triple camera setup on the back. This includes a 50MP primary camera, a 13MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP depth sensor. The front side has a 32MP camera for taking selfies and making video calls.

    Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Camera

The main camera’s daylight performance is quite good. The detail is excellent, and the colours are vibrant and lifelike. Photos are also reasonably sharp, with a good level of contrast. The Moto Edge 30 Fusion has an Ultra-Res mode that captures shots with a resolution of 50MP. These photos aren’t noticeably different from the normal ones.

When switching to the ultra-wide lens, details suffer, but colours remain consistent with the main camera, which really is good. It occasionally takes more contrasty pictures. There are visible distortions around the edges in photos. The ultra-wide lens can also take macro shots.

This camera takes good macro photos, and if you get the focus part right, the result is much better than that of most dedicated 2MP macro sensors.

Selfies taken with the 32MP front camera are detailed and appealing in both portrait and landscape modes. Hair and other face details are beautifully captured. It appears to oversharpen the image during post-processing, which causes my skin to look strange. Aside from that, the selfie camera performed admirably in terms of exposure and colour.

The main camera can record video at up to 8K 30fps. In terms of quality, the primary sensor performs great at 8K resolution. The details are excellent, and the colours are nice and vibrant.

Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Battery and Charging

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion packs a 4400mAh battery, which is smaller when compared to other devices at this price. Considering the slim form factor and lightweight build, it’s not a bad battery capacity. Nonetheless, it still manages to offer a decent battery life.

For a casual user like me, the phone lasted me a whole day. I got somewhere between 5-6 hours of screen on time. My usage involved some gaming, Instagram scrolling, watching YouTube videos and taking pictures. If you are a heavy user, you might need to plug in the charger by the evening.

But not to worry, you don’t have to wait for a long duration to get back on your phone. The Moto Edge 30 Fusion features 68W fast charging support which charges the phone from 0 to 100 per cent in about 50 minutes.

A quick charge of just 15 minutes would juice the battery up to 40 per cent. This will be enough if you have to head out due to some emergency plan. It’s not the fastest charger out there but not bad either. However, I wish Motorola had added wireless charging support. At this price, it would have been a great addition.

    Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Display

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion features an FHD+ 6.55-inch pOLED display with a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels. It features a best-in class refresh rate of 144Hz along with a peak brightness of 1100 nits. Specs wise, I can tell this is a great display for general use.

    Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Display

The display gets bright enough for outdoor usage. I used the phone under direct sunlight to put it to the test, and everything on the screen was clearly visible. The 144Hz refresh rate makes everything super smooth, be it scrolling through social media or navigating the UI. There was not a single time I noticed any lag or shutter.

Apart from that, the display quality is top-notch. The content on the screen was crisp and vibrant with deep blacks. I watched a couple of videos on YouTube and played some games. I’ll be very honest here; my display experience was just amazing. It’s a great display for content consumption.

The bezels on the top and bottom are thin, and the curved edges further enhances your viewing experience. It comes with Widevine L1 DRM and HDR10+ certification, which means you can watch high definition content on OTT platforms like Netflix and Prime Videos.

Overall, I am more than happy with the display of the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion. It will be hard to find a better display at the same price.

    Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Performance

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion doesn’t fall behind in terms of performance either. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chipset which is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. I know it’s not the flagship chip but it’s still powerful.

    Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Performance

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion performed admirably in everyday use. Apps opened up quickly, and I could switch between them smoothly. There is no doubt that the processor is fast and capable of handling whatever you throw at it.

The phone didn’t break a sweat in casual activities like scrolling through social media apps, taking pictures, and texting on WhatsApp. There were no lags or shutters whatsoever. Multitasking was not an issue as well.

In order to further push the phone limits, I tried a couple of games, including Apex Legends Mobile, Asphalt 9 and Call of Duty: Mobile. All the games could run at their high graphic settings.

Apex Legends could run at Ultra HD graphics and High frame rates. Call of Duty: Mobile, on the other hand, ran at High graphic settings and High frame rates. The gameplay was smooth, no matter which game I played. On top of that, I did not notice any kind of lags or frame drops, even after playing continuously for an hour.

Yes, it gets a bit warm after long gaming sessions or any other incentive tasks, but there was no impact on the performance. All in all, there are no complaints in the performance department.

Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Software and UI

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion runs on MyUX skin, which is based on Android 12. Similar to all other Motorola phones, this one also offers a nearly stock Android UI with a layer of added features like custom gestures and wallpapers.

    Edge30 Fusion Software

The UI comes the closest to what a Google Pixel phone would have in terms of appearance and feel. One of Android 12’s most noticeable visual changes is the new notification shade and the Quick Settings interface. There were almost no third-party apps or adware in the UI.

Moto’s exclusive gesture features can be seen here as well, including the karate chop motion, which turns on and off the flashlight, and the twisting motion, which opens the camera app. Motorola promises two years of major software updates and three years of security updates for the Edge 30 Fusion.

You also get edge display notifications, which light up the phone’s edges when it’s facing down. This is, without a doubt, one of the most appealing features of Motorola’s latest mid-range smartphone. The overall software experience was seamless, and I had no problems with my day-to-day usage.

Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Audio, Connectivity, Biometrics

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion features stereo speakers, one located at the bottom while the earpiece acts as the other one. It offers rich, clear and loud audio. It also supports Dolby Atmos, and you can adjust the audio using the app. Similarly, the mic quality was good, and I faced no issues while making audio calls.

The phone comes with 5G connectivity and supports 13 5G bands. These include: n1/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40/41/66/77/78. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS and NFC.

The Edge 30 Fusion features an in-display fingerprint scanner which quickly unlocks the phone. It is located somewhat too close to the bottom side, which can be a bit inconvenient. Other than that, it was pretty reliable and accurate. You can also use the face unlock feature which also works well in proper lighting.

    Verdict

The Edge 30 Fusion is aimed at those who wish to experience flagship-level performance without spending a fortune. Its striking design is similar to what you would typically see on a high-end smartphone.

The phone also has a good camera setup, a stunning display, 68W fast charging support, and decent stereo speakers. Moreover, the stock like Android UI is clean and simple to use, with the promise of two years of software updates.

Yes, the camera quality could have been better and the lack of wireless charging is a bummer. Aside from that, it’s a phone that’s difficult to ignore. So, if you’re looking for overall flagship performance at a mid-range price, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion can be a good choice.
